How to recover Instagram without email or phone number
Changing numbers, closing an old email or losing the phone with your authenticator app are the most common reasons to get locked out of Instagram. In many cases there is a way back.
In this guide
First: try to recover the email or phone line
Often the quickest route isn’t fighting with Instagram but getting back the channel it was linked to. If the account used a Gmail, Outlook or Yahoo address, try that provider’s recovery process. If it used your number, ask your carrier for a replacement SIM with the same number: in most countries you only need to bring your ID.
As soon as you recover the email or number, the normal forgotten password process will work again.
Use identity verification
If you can recover neither the email nor the number, start the login help process and look for the option saying you no longer have access to that email or phone. Instagram may then ask for a video selfie, a new email address to contact you and some account details.
The contact email you give at this step is where Meta will write to you. Make sure it is a secure address you have full access to, and check the spam folder too.
If the authentication code doesn’t arrive
- Backup codes. When you turned on two-factor authentication, Instagram offered one-time codes. If you saved them, any one of them lets you in.
- Another signed-in device. If you are still logged in on a tablet or another phone, you can review or change the verification method from there.
- Recognised device. From a phone Instagram already knows, you can sometimes confirm the login without a code.
- Confirm your identity. If none of the above works, the code screen usually offers a way to verify your identity by other means.
Does an ID document help recover Instagram?
In some cases Meta asks for a photo of an official ID document, such as an ID card or passport, especially when it can’t confirm your identity with a video selfie or the account has no photos of you. The document must match the name on the account and be clearly legible.
Upload your ID only inside the official forms that appear during the process. Anyone who asks for it on WhatsApp, Instagram or by email to “handle” the recovery could use it to impersonate you.
Tips for successful verification
- Start from the phone and connection you normally used.
- Use details consistent with the account: same name and same country.
- Record the video in good light without accessories covering your face.
- If you are rejected, wait before trying again instead of retrying straight away.

Frequently asked questions
Can I recover Instagram without email, phone or code?
In many cases, yes, through Meta’s identity verification. Your chances improve if the account has photos in which you can be recognised and if you start the process from a device you already used.
I lost the phone with my authenticator app. What now?
Look for the backup codes Instagram offered when you turned on two-factor authentication. If you don’t have them, try logging in from another device where you are still signed in, or use the option to confirm your identity on the code screen.
Will Instagram call me to verify my account?
No. Instagram does not call users to verify accounts. If you get a call like that, it is a scam attempt to obtain your codes.
